A talk outlining an argument in favor of allowing women to participate fully in public ministry despite scripture passages which on the surface seem to prohibit it. Includes a look at 1st century Greco-Roman culture, as well as the hermeneutical 'Rule of Purpose'.

In this talk, we first look at some classical Greek perspectives and teaching on Husbands and Wives - how they should relate to one another. Next, with this cultural background in mind, we look at some of the biblical passages on this topic. It is suggested that Paul is very progressive for his day. Far from being a misogynist, he could perhaps be better described as a feminist. He affirms the cultural value of wifely submission, but goes way beyond it by placing it in the framework of MUTUAL submission (Eph 5:21). This is revolutionary and unheard of in the first century.

We look at some key bible passages (including Lev 18, John 8, Rom 1) and have a brief history lesson about how this issue was viewed in the 1st Century. We then briefly look at an extreme Christian right wing interpretation, as well as an left wing interpretation, then we will look at a more 'middle way' orthodox perspective, and some variations on that. We are not presenting the 'Southern Cross Community Church official viewpoint' (if one actually exists), but a range of possibilities and some good and bad ways that one goes about arriving at their own viewpoint.

Hope can be found in some very surprising places. A Palliative care context found a way of transforming hopelessness to hope. Many of the principles being used are found to be functional in Christian contexts that also transform Hopelessness to a deep sense of peace.
